Patriots –
The New England Patriots’ season has surprised just about everyone in the sports world. A team with four wins the previous year exploded for a 14-win season that far exceeded preseason predictions. Quarterback Drake Maye, wide receiver Stefon Diggs, cornerback/punt returner Marcus Jones, and cornerback Christian Gonzalez have all been standout performers this season, with Gonzalez and Maye being selected for the Pro Bowl. Maye currently finds himself in a heated two-horse MVP race with the Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Patriots won the AFC East division for the first time in six years, retaking the crown from the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen. Mike Vrabel, in his first year as head coach, finds himself in the conversation for the Coach of the Year Award. The Patriots finished as the second seed in the playoffs and advanced past the Los Angeles Chargers in the first round, 16-3, thanks to an impressive defensive effort from pass rushers Milton Williams and K’Lavon Chaisson, who each had two sacks. Maye threw for 268 yards and a touchdown to tight end Hunter Henry, while also running for almost 70 yards on the ground, which was a huge difference maker in the game. In the divisional round, the Patriots forced five turnovers in a truly incredible defensive performance, defeating the Houston Texans 28-16. On a snowy Sunday in Denver. Colorado, the Patriots squeezed past the Broncos 10-7 to clinch a Super Bowl birth, an incredible turnaround from last year. Conditions were horrible for the game, as the nationwide blizzard reached Mile High Stadium in the third quarter and the snow started piling up fast. The Patriots have two weeks of rest before they face the Seattle Seahawks in a rematch of the 2015 Super Bowl.
Bruins –
The Bruins let go of their longtime star left wing, Brad Marchand, in a trade with the Florida Panthers last season. This change was incredibly disappointing to the majority of Bruins fans, who had come to adore their captain as a franchise staple. He won the Stanley Cup with his new team, his second career championship, after previously hoisting the trophy with the Bruins in 2011. The 2024–25 season ended with the Bruins missing the playoffs and looking to rebuild. The 2025–26 season has had its ups and downs, with Charlie McAvoy and David Pastrnak being the two remaining stars for the team. The Bruins also selected James Hagens, a Boston College product, as their first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. The Bruins have secured the first wild card spot midway through January and are heating up heading into the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, where several Bruins have been selected to compete for their national teams.
Celtics –
Celtic Nation began the season with its lowest expectations in ten years. All-Star small forward Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles tendon in Game Four of last year’s playoff series against the New York Knicks, which sent the team into a tailspin during the offseason. The Celtics then gutted their roster by trading away point guard Jrue Holiday and center Kristaps Porzingis to gain salary-cap flexibility. A rebuilding year seemed inevitable. This season, however, has gone completely differently from what anyone expected. Jayson Tatum has made incredible progress in his recovery and eyes plans to return to the team. Shooting guard Jaylen Brown, the 2024 Finals MVP, has emerged as a major leader and prolific scorer, averaging 30 points per game, placing him in the top five in the league and leading some to suggest he could be an MVP candidate. The Celtics were also predicted to be a play-in team before the season, meaning they would likely finish between the sixth and 10th seeds in the Eastern Conference. Instead, they are 24-15 and third in the Eastern Conference. Joe Mazzula’s “Celtics University,” a phrase used to describe his coaching philosophy of reviewing game film and developing basketball IQ. His success with this program is evident, as he is 208-80 in his three-plus years with the team. There is a promising future ahead for the Celtics as they gear up for an unexpected playoff run.
Red Sox –
The Red Sox finished their season by losing in the American League Wild Card to their bitter rival, the New York Yankees. This trip to the postseason marked the Red Sox’s first since 2021, and an ever-increasing outlook on the future in Fenway. The Red Sox, led by rookie sensation Roman Anthony and Golden Glove winner Cedanne Rafaela, are gearing up for another season. The Red Sox are currently deciding the future of their third base position, as Alex Bregman, who opted out of his deal with the Red Sox, just signed with the Chicago Cubs on a 5-year, $175 million contract. The Red Sox are notorious for having lackluster offseasons, but Craig Breslow and John Henry believe their young roster already has what it takes to be a contender for the World Series. With Spring Training just around the corner, the season should be full of surprises.
