Varsity Volleyball beat Thayer 3-0 at Friday Night Lights (FNL).
After a devastating loss to Thayer last year, the team was hungry for a win. They have been preparing for their epic FNL game all season, emphasizing teamwork and communication to bring home the win.
Agaezi Chukwu (Class II) said, “Our strategy is to make sure we’re playing cohesively and communicating, because that’s really important in volleyball, or else the ball is gonna drop.”
Not only did the team want to work together more closely, but they also wanted to have greater confidence in their roles on the court.
Chukwu said, “Since our last game, we’ve worked on owning our roles and positions and trying to help our other teammates be better. Good passes lead to good sets, and good sets lead to good hits.”
Winning this game was crucial for the team, as they were already on a two-game win streak. Additionally, if they could pull off a win, they would have more ISL wins this season so far than they did in total last season. This hard work paid off, as the game was handily won in three sets, with Chukwu hitting 10 kills out of 17 attempts, along with 2 blocks.
Nobles packed the house and brought the energy to the 5 pm game, and the girls responded. Thayer couldn’t keep up with Nobles’ improvements, and they cracked under pressure. Set 1 culminated in a score of 25-17, Set 2: 25-14, and Set 3: 25-16. The showout was undoubtedly one of the factors that helped encourage the Nobles team.
Libero Evie Shih (Class II) said, “I’m really glad that we won this year. We worked really hard for it, and it was cool that everyone came out. We had a good win, and the energy was good.”
She tallied 18 digs and went errorless on 17 serves with two aces during the game.
Shih named Kailynn Zheng (Class I) her MVP of the game, with nine kills on 15 attempts, as well as 15 assists. Johanna Heller (Class II) was also a standout player, going errorless on 7 serves and 4 aces in just one set. The Varsity Volleyball team now boasts three ISL wins and looks forward to more success this season.
